“Y-You’ll help me find it? Really?!” Bruno’s eyes glowed. “Thank you!”
He seemed so cheery for someone who lived in Satellite.
Yuusei nodded, helping Bruno search.
He is way too fucking happy. Probably high as a kite or something.
He was about to crawl between the dumpster and the wall when he saw the shivering kitten crouched behind an old bag. He took off his vest and used it to reach behind and pick up the soiled ball of fur.
“Got it.”
“Ohhh poor thing!” He took the shivering creature from Yusei and held it in his arms.
“He needs help right away!”
Yuusei nodded. “Let’s hurry, then,” he said while quickly beginning to make his way in the right direction once more. Kiryu wouldn’t worry if he was back late. He knew Yuusei slipped out some nights to patrol or just unwind.
“Just be careful next time if you come this way. Usually we’re pretty good at keeping our territory safe, but at night like this… sometimes not.”
Bruno nodded at him as they raced toward where he lived. He lived in a decent sized building filled with animals he was nursing back to health.
Before he entered his home he turned to Yusei.
“Should I return this to you when I’ve washed it?”
Yuusei looked at the vest and then extended his hands. “I’ll take it. I’ll wash it. If I don’t bring it home Kiryu will freak out.” He laughed a bit and rubbed his hands off on his jeans. “Hey uh… Look, I find a lot of sick animals. What if I started bringing them here?”
Why did he say that?
Why?
Maybe because Bruno looked like the only happy person he’d seen in a long time.
“I’d be happy to take them in!” Bruno smiled at him.
“And you’re welcome to come by any time. Um… as long as it’s not for gang purposes…” He frowned slightly. He’d love company but he wouldn’t let himself be taken advantage of.

“I-I’m Bruno. I live by the beach on the west side. I hate violence, so I stayed away from the duel gangs… they don’t like that.” He chuckled weakly.
“I rescue hurt animals and nurse them back to health.”
Yuusei just stared for a moment, smoking pooling out from between half-closed lips. “Well that’s good hobby, then,” he murmured, making his way off in the direction which would lead toward the west beach.
I duel to survive and this guy raises sick kittens. Wonderful.
But despite that thought he did admire his kindness.
“Really. It is. I see a lot of abuse happen… I don’t like it.”
Bruno followed after him, cringing a little at the smell of cigarette.
“I… I don’t like violence… or abuse…”
He grew quiet, dark memories threatening to resurface. He shook them from his mind.
“I try to stay away from gang territories… but that cat was really hurt. I hope it’s okay…”
Yuusei paused and turned on his heel, moving down the ally nearest to them and putting the cigarette out. “We’ll look for ten minutes before we have to get moving. This way is a dead end. If it ran down here then it’s probably hiding in some of these trash piles.”
He glanced around, clicking his tongue.

Bruno looked at this newcomer. He looked serious. Bruno wasn’t sure if that remark was made solely for the other gang members or it that went for him too. It didn’t matter, because at that moment the other gang members advanced upon the other boy. Bruno watched with terror, too scared to move.
Yuusei’s eyes narrowed and he shot forward. His fist made hard contact with the leader’s jaw, and a swift kick to the gut followed. He moved with the speed and flexibility that he’d learned ensured your survival. This wasn’t an easy place to live, after all.
He took his stance in front of Bruno with his eyes darting from person to person before him. “I have three other guys I can get out here with one call. Run. Run before I decided to show you more than just a crushing duel.”
Bruno was shaking with fear and relief. He watched the beaten gang members flee with their tail between their legs. He gazed up at his savior, his mouth dry.
“T-Thank you…” he managed to say.
Yuusei finally turned to look down at the boy he’d saved. He scanned him once. His clothing didn’t remind him of any duel gangs. He hadn’t seen him before, which made him wonder if he was from the underground or the far outskirts of Satellite.
He extended his hand to help him up.
“You’re lucky. Guys like that doesn’t care who they hurt these days.”
He offered a ghost of a smile.
“Thank you. I-I owe you my life!” Bruno stammered, still shaking a little from shock.
“I was chasing a stray cat who’s tail was injured, and I guess I ventured into someone’s territory… I didn’t know…”
Yuusei cocked a brow. How did this guy not know about the dueling territories?
“Where are you from? I can take you as far as our territory goes, maybe beyond if it’s safe.”
He took in the man’s appearance. He guessed they were around the same age, give or take a year.
“I’m Yuusei. Yuusei Fudo,” he said with a curt nod. He pulled a somewhat crumpled cigarette from his pocket and lit it. “We should hurry before it gets too light out.”
